Astana Opera soloist Nursultan Anuarbek has performed in Richard Strauss’s Salome under the baton of the renowned Maestro Valery Gergiev.
Taking on the role of the Fourth Jew in this profoundly complex and psychologically intense opera was a significant artistic challenge for the singer. Strauss’s score – particularly the ‘dispute of the five Jews’ featuring Nursultan Anuarbek – places immense demands on the cast, requiring exceptional vocal command, a flawless sense of rhythm, ensemble precision and dramatic intensity. Such demanding material truly tests a singer’s mettle, and Anuarbek delivered a masterful performance.
“Debuting on the Bolshoi’s historic stage was an invaluable experience. For any artist, performing here is an immense responsibility and a source of great joy. Working with Maestro Valery Gergiev offered an insight into the sheer scale and excellence of his artistry, as well as the exacting standards required by both the music and the venue,” said Nursultan Anuarbek.
Alongside the other members of the quintet, Anuarbek’s character embodies the spiritual discord of Herodes’ court. His lines, which caution against ‘dangerous doctrines’, are woven into one of the most dynamic and complex polyphonic ensembles in the operatic repertoire, demanding pinpoint accuracy.
The high-stakes performance followed a month of intensive preparation. Rehearsing under Maestro Gergiev, known for his uncompromising artistic standards and dedication, served as an invaluable masterclass for the young tenor.
The production itself boasts a distinguished pedigree, having been staged in collaboration with the legendary Metropolitan Opera by an acclaimed creative team led by director Claus Guth, set designer Etienne Pluss and costume designer Ursula Kudrna.
This performance marks a natural progression in the Kazakh tenor’s rising career. Having recently passed three rounds of rigorous auditions, Anuarbek joined the Bolshoi Theatre’s Young Artists Opera Programme in late November 2025.
