The Astana Opera Children’s Studio Prepares for the New Season

This summer, the Astana Opera Children’s Studio launched its inaugural creative camp, welcoming participants across two terms. Each term was capped at a maximum of 20 children, meaning demand invariably exceeded the available places. This came as little surprise, given the exceptionally rich and intensive programme on offer.
Each day, the children immersed themselves in a creative world spanning six disciplines: choreography, acting, choral singing, textile crafts, painting and drawing, and calligraphy. However, for many, the ultimate revelation was discovering the inner workings of the opera house itself. As part of the summer itinerary, a bespoke behind-the-scenes tour left an indelible impression on the young enthusiasts. They ventured backstage to witness firsthand the complexities of stage mechanics, lighting, and sound. Furthermore, they explored the specialized worlds of theatrical make-up, the props department, wardrobe, footwear production, the tailoring workshops, the audio department, and the opera house’s extensive library.
“I would like to express my immense gratitude to the administration of the Astana Opera Children’s Studio and all the tutors at the summer creative camp for these vibrant, fulfilling, and inspiring days,” remarked Elmira Gabbasova. “It was here that my daughter picked up a needle and thread for the very first time, and she even went on to sew several craft pieces. Thank you for the engaging creative classes and the wonderful variety of tours around the opera house. I am deeply grateful for your professionalism, the warm and nurturing atmosphere – we could truly see how much the children grew to love you – as well as the new discoveries and the pure joy you brought them. Creative camps like this are vital, and we will certainly return.”
The organizers set themselves a vital objective: to keep children engaged during the holidays while encouraging them to explore their creative potential and discover where their true passions lay. Furthermore, the camp aimed to broaden the audience base of the children’s studio, which historically had been known primarily to those directly connected to the arts. Judging by the feedback, this strategy proved highly successful. Many participants later returned with their parents to attend performances of Donizetti’s L’ Elisir d’Amore, Verdi’s Aida, Jarre’s ballet Notre-Dame de Paris, and various concerts in the Kulyash Baiseitova Chamber Hall. In this way, a creative engagement with the arts extended far beyond the confines of the children’s studio itself.
The Astana Opera Children’s Studio will resume its activities for the 14th season on 3 September. Meanwhile, auditions and admissions remain open throughout August, with applications accepted via the opera house’s official website. The studio operates across three distinct departments: choral, ballet, and theatrical crafts. Young choristers regularly perform in repertoire operas and concerts at the Kulyash Baiseitova Chamber Hall, whilst students in the ballet department master the fundamentals of classical dance. In the crafts studio, children enjoy an insider’s view of theatrical professions, exploring specialized roles such as prop-making and costume cutting.
Reflecting on the studio’s impact, parents and students alike have shared a wealth of warm accolades for the Astana Opera. The upcoming season promises to be equally vibrant as the opera house once again opens its doors to the next generation of creative minds.
