Celebrating 10 years on the stage of Astana Opera! This anniversary production is dedicated to the 180th anniversary of the great poet, thinker, and enlightener Abai Kunanbayev, whose legacy is an integral part of Kazakh culture.
A classic of national art, the opera “Abai”, composed by Akhmet Zhubanov and Latif Khamidi to the libretto by Mukhtar Auezov, is regarded as a true gem of the Kazakh opera school.
On the stage of Astana Opera, it was directed by chief conductor Alan Buribayev, great-grandson of Akhmet Zhubanov, adding unique generational continuity and value to the production.
The staging brought together legends of world theatre: stage director Giancarlo del Monaco, set designer Ezio Frigerio, and costume designer Franca Squarciapino.
These names are inscribed in the history of the global stage, and their contribution has turned “Abai” into an international cultural event.
The opera “Abai” is more than just a musical work – it is a philosophical drama about justice, love, and spiritual greatness. It unites national traditions with universal human values.
