Flip-flops — not welcome: Milan’s opera tightens dress code
The famous Italian opera house La Scala will no longer allow entry to guests wearing shorts, tank tops, or flip-flops. Visitors are asked to “dress in a way that reflects the etiquette of the theater and shows respect for the venue and fellow audience members.” Those who fail to follow the dress code may be denied entry, and no refund will be issued.
However, formal evening gowns or ties are not required, La Scala notes. Blouses or dresses with bare shoulders are permitted. Staff will consider cultural attire — for example, Japanese guests wearing traditional kimonos and sandals will be allowed in.
La Scala is one of the most renowned opera houses in the world and a major tourist attraction in Milan. It seats around 2,000 people.
